Healthy! -And now for some interview things.

August 11th, 2009 oda 4 comments

So I have got my health back. That was about time. The hamtrax was getting on my nerves.

Job interview tomorrow!
Preparation:

Bath. I need to Chill The Funk Down. Nice bath.
Shoes. Good shoes. Polished.
Shirt that fits. (Thanks Bravissimo!)

Stalking my interviewer online.
Stalking the company online. They seem to have written their own wikipedia article, complete with links to news-stories, all ready for the interested candidate. Awesome!
Watching Videojug’s inteview advice. Rikke Hansen (Best hidden danish accent ever) is very good.

Reading my CV again.

Trying to find my proof of having passed school things.
-I seem to have lost my SQA papers, but Highers weren’t my real qualification anyway.
Would be nice to show off the A in english though…
Got translation of the Norwegian qualifications, and proof that I am awesome from previous workplace.

Heels, yes or no? Heeding the advice from @Orjas’ book regarding female signals in the workplace.
Need to ask male for advice on level of pretty vs. professional.

Learning the lingo of SEO and online reputation management.
(So I can use the correct terms for stuff I know)

Freaking out over a skirt choice dilemma. Possibly going for trousers. Freaking over trouser dilemma.
Reading Swedish and Danish newspapers to make sure I actually speak the languages still. (I do.)

Now all I have to do is show up on time. Oh, and be amazing at them. No worries.

Odas Valgtemp – Feberørska

August 5th, 2009 oda 3 comments

Velg. Enten er man idealist eller regjeringsmedlem. Velg.

Swineflu, livecover, day one.

August 5th, 2009 oda 4 comments

So I have been diagnosed with (possible) swineflu.
Will cover it live from bed for public interest.

Symptoms:

Blurry vision.
Dry-ish and kinda sharply hurting cough.
Difficulty breathing.
Snot. Lots of it.
Mild nausea, probably snot-related.
Stomach-upset
Tiredness, sleeping twice normal hours (13 as opposed to 6,5)
Waking up lots during the night because of breathing or being too hot.
Mental fatigue. (Watching Yes, Minister for one episode made me want to snooze.)
Headache.
Chest pains.
Hot flushes. Standing in front of an open window feels far too good.
Fever. Unsure how high.
Muscle weakness, randomly and annoyingly stopping me from getting up or lifting the kettle.
Brain Not Working Properly. (Writing this post has taken me close to an hour, I stutter for words on the phone and forget the beginning of sentences mid sentence.)

Medication:

Paracetamol for the fever and pains
Benilin for the cough
Sudafed for the breathing at night

Status: Bored. Really, really bored.
I can’t read things, even Norwegian kids books. I can skim online articles but not understand them, I can’t sleep.
I am too hot for everything. I have made egg drop soup, but that was as much cooking as I felt up to, and even then I cut myself whilst chopping garlic.. I never cut myself whilst cooking. Ever.

Å stå opp om morran

August 3rd, 2009 oda 1 comment

Mestring.

CV

July 30th, 2009 oda 1 comment

So far I have got a few interviews with this CV.

Apparently it is ok, despite being a bit heavy on the buzzwords.

(It is not a beautiful thing, pardon the formatting, MS Word was at one point involved in the process… This is not an example to be followed. )

Oda foreslår nytt norsk ord: Facistfylla

July 30th, 2009 oda 5 comments

Boys are all losers. Of course they are. And school is to blame.

July 27th, 2009 oda No comments

Analysis of the results after the national tests in Norwegian primary education has shown that boys in 8th grade (15-16 years or so) read far worse than their female peers.

EXCEPT when their parents have high education. In which case girls and boys alike do well.

So my question is: How on earth can low educated parents complain about the feminisation of schooling, and how schools are for girls and gays, and so on when they clearly are the ones to blame for their sons’ low attainment?

As here is a proven link between low educational outcome and extremely gendered views in general, and a working class view on mens work is not known for being linked to academic performance, perhaps the whining about “Femiskolen” and “emasculation of boys” is more related to the general attitude to schooling among these boys’ parents, and maybe also the low achievement-levels of their sons have something to do with their parents’ attitudes? Just wondering…

Ofcourse, norway has no working class as everyone is the same, so please disregard this ranting.

Social Demography

July 27th, 2009 oda No comments

This is pasted for my examrevision of social demography. A Wonderful exam (I got an A), in a subject taught by a demographer who started out in gender studies, my most inspiring lecturer yet.

“Social demography has the perks that the main theory and founding event of this statistical subject “The demographic transition“, occured in a time of few to no records on poupulation composition, happened at various times in various countries to various extent, with the events and assumed causes of the effect having no system to them when countries are compared. Norway were quite EARLY with a fairly accurate-ish cencus (Ignoring certain vagrant groups and ethnic minorities and suchlike), the first one being in 1901. Demography is in other words the art of making accurate predictions based on the past on which we have no meaningful data, assuming that all generations will have identical lifecourses, no social change happens, and ignoring immigration.

It makes for great essays and much EU funding.

This is another feminist lecturer, this time a man, who has his own special theories regarding female emancipation as an EFFECT of lower birthrates, rather than as a cause of them. These theories are seductively simple and intuitive, and I have to work really hard to not take everything he sais as fact. The man is just TOO NICE.

Anyway, for those of you interested in numbers which are lies:

Replacement rate: The assumed number of children each woman must have to keep the population up. It is calculated by adding a fraction of each child a woman have had over a cross section of society. i.e, It takes the number of kids 1000 16yearolds have, divide it by the bredth of the study (The gap from 16 to 50), and then do the same to every year in the cohort.  And add up the average number of children a fertile woman have AT THAT TIME.

The replacement level of 2,1 is entirely arbitrary, after the system “2 per couple, plus a bit for the infertile ones and early deaths”. This number would be entirely ok to measure trends with if all generations did presicely like the previous one. The recent dip in replacement rate is more likely to do with women delaying childbirth till after education, than women deciding not to have kids. Which is the case will only be measurable when the women who FIRST decided to delay childbirth have come to the end of their fertile years (or more to the point: The end of what is measured).  In norway this number has now corrected itself, and women of Norway are birthing as much as before the intruduction to the pill.

I will come back to you on this one in 30 years in other words.

Ageing population: The art of making the fact that childhood mortality has reduced, and people surviving past 70 seem like a bad thing.

Dependency ratio: Surely this is the number of people who are economically active divided by the people depending on these people for support? Surely? No.
This is the number of people of working age, divided by the people under 16 and over pensionable age. Another perfectly good measure in certain economic situations. But not when it comes to deciding if we are heading for a tax burden crisis. Students, the infirm, the unemployed, and female labourmarket participation has NO effect on this ratio. If anything it has “improved”, as large families are no longer commonplace, and infant mortality is extremely low.

…I am fairly relaxed. And feeling smug. I have defeated numbers. Using brains.
